For many, starting university brings the excitement of new opportunities, but it can also mean stepping out of your comfort zone and leaving behind the familiarity of friends and family. Remember that God has placed you in this country, city, town, and university for a purpose. We have compiled a list of helpful tips to help you embark on this new adventure. We cannot wait to meet you!

Bulgaria is a land of incredible diversity and charm, offering cultural heritage and natural beauty. From the mountaintops of Vitosha, hiking, skiing, Black Sea beaches, Roman amphitheater, medieval fortress, and enchanting towns. Embrace the opportunity to explore and create unforgettable memories during your time in Bulgaria. Try the local food; Banitsa, Shopska Salad, Kebapche, Tartor, Metikisi and Moussaka. 2. Have a look around your local areas
Whether you're staying in Sofia, Varna, or another town there’s plenty to see and do. Have a look around and get to know your local supermarket, bakeries, coffee shops, restaurants, pharmacy, doctors, hospital, and leisure activities. Explore the streets and get to know the place you’re been staying in for the next four years .Your time at university is a great opportunity to explore and find out more about different cities and towns.
3. Learn the language
Have a go at learning the Bulgarian language which includes the Cyrillic alphabet. Learning a language helps you to immerse and understand the culture. There are plenty of free resources online, language schools, and private tutors. Speak to your university to see what courses they offer. Learning the language will not only make day-to-day life easier but also give you a deeper appreciation of Bulgarian traditions, history, and way of life.
4. Find your local community
Starting life in a new city can feel both exciting and overwhelming, but building connections is a great way to make it feel like home. Take time to get to know other university students, whether they’re on your course or living nearby. Seek out opportunities to meet others through campus events, student societies, or even casual meet-ups from your accommodation. Making friends in a new place not only helps you settle in but also gives you a sense of belonging and support. Building these relationships can turn your new city into a community where you feel truly connected.
5. Finding your Church family
We want to encourage you to discover a Church family where you can truly belong. A place where you can hear God’s Word spoken, join in worship through song, and find meaningful fellowship with other believers.
Church is more than a building; it’s a community where you can grow deeper in your relationship with Jesus, experience His love, and explore the questions that matter most to you. Whether you’re seeking guidance, connection, or a space to reflect and renew, a Church family waiting to welcome you with open arms. Wherever you are on your journey, we pray you find a place where your faith and love for Jesus will grow more deeply.
6. Share your traditions and culture
Bring a bit of home with you! Living in a new country or town is exciting but it’s easy to miss home including your home comforts. Don’t forget to pack decorations from home or your favourite snack. Share your culture, traditions, and hobbies with your new friends.
7. Join in with BCSU IConnect
We have communities of students in various cities across Bulgaria. They provide the perfect opportunity for students to grow in their faith and also as leaders and disciples of Christ. These groups are a lot of fun, and many people find lifelong friends in them. There are regular events held throughout the month and weekly bible studies.
